UNICAL’s Law, Physics and 2 other courses risk losing NUC accreditation

< 1 mn read

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has indicated that four undergraduate courses at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) are currently under interim accreditation status. According to documents signed by the Acting Director of Accreditation, Engr. Abraham Chundusu, these courses include Law, Anatomy, Physics, and Forest & Wildlife Management. Interim accreditation typically lasts for two years and requires reassessment during that period.

The NUC further highlighted that if a program receives interim accreditation twice consecutively, it will be denied full accreditation. Full accreditation, on the other hand, is valid for five years and signifies that a program meets all quality standards set by the NUC.

In contrast to the courses under interim accreditation, the Faculty of Engineering & Technology at UNICAL has achieved full accreditation for several departments. This achievement reflects the university’s commitment to providing high-quality engineering education. The departments that received full accreditation include Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering.

Moreover, the implementation of Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) starting from the 2023/2024 academic year has been emphasized. This requirement applies to all programs at UNICAL, ensuring compliance with national academic standards.

Overall, the accreditation status update underscores the ongoing efforts of UNICAL to maintain and enhance the quality of education offered across its various disciplines.
