The Domestic Transparency Watch has urged the Rivers State Government to legally challenge the alleged High Court ruling affirming the PDP membership of 27 lawmakers aligned with Governor Nyesom Wike. The group labeled these lawmakers as “confused and stranded” former members of the state House of Assembly. In a statement by its President, Adam Biu, the organization expressed concern over what it perceives as reckless behavior by these lawmakers.
Biu highlighted that the lawmakers’ switch from the PDP to the APC allegedly violated specific sections of the Nigerian Constitution. Despite evidence presented of their defection, the High Court purportedly ruled them still to be PDP members and thus continued members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The group called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration to vigorously oppose and legally contest the alleged ruling for the benefit of the state’s citizens. They criticized the former lawmakers’ actions as political misconduct aimed at undermining the law and destabilizing the state.
Furthermore, the Domestic Transparency Watch joined others in demanding that the National Judicial Council (NJC) investigate the judgment of the Rivers State High Court regarding the reinstatement of the former state House of Assembly members.
