Sule Abdulaziz, the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has announced that the company now has the capacity to transmit up to 6,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity across the country.
In an interview with NAN, Abdulaziz highlighted that TCN has recently installed new transformers and upgraded several substations over the past three years. These upgrades were financed through internally generated revenue and support from donor agencies.
The MD explained that TCN’s grid capacity was verified through a scientific capacity determination method, and recent grid simulations indicated a capacity of 8,100 MW. In March 2021, TCN successfully transmitted 5,801 MW from power generating companies to distribution centers nationwide.
Abdulaziz further detailed that TCN’s projects include the construction of new substations and transmission lines, which have contributed to the enhanced grid capacity. The MD also noted that the company aims to further increase its transmission capacity by the end of the year.
TCN is a key player in the Nigerian Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), which seeks to address existing challenges in the power sector and expand the capacity of transmission and distribution networks. This initiative is being carried out in three phases and aims to achieve a total operational capacity of 25,000 MW.
