Some Nigerians have no choice but to use charcoal stoves as kerosene price skyrockets

< 1 mn read

Due to the skyrocketing cost of kerosene, which now sells for between ₦1,350 and ₦1,600 per liter, many residents of Enugu have shifted from using kerosene stoves to charcoal stoves for cooking. This trend has led to a significant increase in the demand for charcoal, even though its price has also risen from ₦5,000 to ₦8,000 per sack.

Grace Umeh, a charcoal seller at Garki Market, explained that despite the price hike, charcoal remains a more economical option for families. An average family of five can spend over ₦20,000 monthly on kerosene, whereas a bag of charcoal, which lasts up to two months, costs significantly less. Oby Okafor, another seller at Mayor Market, noted that families are buying charcoal in large quantities to cope with the high cost of other energy sources.

Christiana Ozor, a dealer at Achara Layout, mentioned that she now sells more than two bags of charcoal daily due to increased demand. Buyers like Gilbert Nnamdi appreciate the cost-effectiveness of charcoal, with ₦200 worth sufficient for cooking substantial meals. Additionally, newer charcoal stoves are user-friendly, igniting quickly and producing minimal smoke.

Many users, including food vendors, have adopted charcoal due to its affordability compared to kerosene and cooking gas. Ijeoma Dim, a restaurant owner, and other vendors have found charcoal to be a more viable option amidst rising energy costs.

In light of these economic challenges, residents are urging the government to make all cooking energy sources affordable and accessible. Ensuring affordable cooking energy is essential for easing the financial burden on households and supporting their daily needs.
