The tragic incident involving Fadhilatun Nikmah, a 28-year-old police officer in East Java, Indonesia, has shocked many. Fadhilatun committed a horrifying act by burning her husband, Brigadier Rian Dwi Wicaksono, to death following an argument over his excessive spending on online gambling.
The events unfolded on June 8, when Fadhilatun, armed with a bottle of gasoline, threatened Rian to return home promptly or she would harm their children. She took precautionary measures by asking their babysitter to take the three children, including four-month-old twins, outside for safety.
Upon Rian’s return, the argument escalated quickly over his misuse of a bonus salary intended for their family. The bonus, originally 2.8 million rupiah (about $232.86), had been squandered on gambling, leaving only 800,000 rupiah (approximately $66.53) remaining. In a fit of rage, Fadhilatun handcuffed Rian to a ladder in their garage, poured gasoline on him, and set him on fire.
Despite Rian’s desperate attempts to escape and cries for help, he was trapped by a car blocking the garage exit and his handcuffed position. A neighbor intervened upon hearing Rian’s screams, extinguished the flames, and called for medical help. Rian suffered severe burns covering 96% of his body and, despite initially regaining consciousness after intensive treatment, tragically succumbed to his injuries the next day.
Fadhilatun has since been detained at an Integrated Service Centre due to the care requirements of her three young children, all under the age of five. The decision was made in consideration of their welfare and the legal provisions for children’s rights.
In the aftermath of this horrific incident, the three children are receiving psychological support to help them cope with the trauma of losing their father and witnessing their mother’s actions. This support aims to provide them with the necessary care and stability during this difficult period.
The case has sparked widespread shock and dismay, highlighting the devastating consequences of domestic disputes and the tragic impact on innocent lives, particularly the young children left behind.
