Popular Ghanaian counselor, George Lutterodt, has made headlines with his assertion that Ghanaian law does not explicitly ban marrying more than one person. Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz on August 31, 2024, Lutterodt clarified that while the law does not prohibit polygamy, cultural and religious considerations influence marriage practices in Ghana.
Lutterodt advised that individuals who wish to practice polygamy should opt for customary marriage rather than civil marriage. He noted that customary marriages can accommodate multiple spouses, contrasting with civil marriage regulations.
He also discussed societal expectations, stating that while women are entitled to depend on their husbands, it is incorrect for women to depend on men outside of marital contexts. Lutterodt emphasized the importance of understanding the complexities of polygamy and its impact on family dynamics.
