President Bola Tinubu has given his nod to the appointment of Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe as the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), subject to confirmation by the NCCC’s Supervisory Council. This move aligns with the President’s commitment to realizing Nigeria’s green industrial vision and enhancing investor confidence through climate finance instruments. Additionally, Maduekwe, aged 39, has been designated as the Co-Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP).
Maduekwe brings to the role over 15 years of experience in climate policy development and project implementation, holding degrees in Law and Environmental Law & Policy from reputable institutions in the UK. She has previously served as Nigeria’s National Coordinator for Climate Parliament, an international network of legislators addressing the climate crisis and promoting renewable energy.
In tandem with Maduekwe’s appointment, Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng, aged 40, has been appointed as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement, with a focus on matters related to climate finance and stakeholder/donor relations. Shelleng will also serve as the Secretary of the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP).
Furthermore, Mr. Olamide Fagbuji, aged 44, has been appointed as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations. Fagbuji will oversee the digitalization of procurement processes and procedural optimization initiatives within the NCCC Secretariat.
These appointments, effective immediately, reflect the President’s expectation for the appointees to utilize their expertise and discipline in advancing Nigeria’s green industrial development and climate action agenda for sustainable growth and national prosperity.
