NACHON urges Nigerian pilgrims to avoid direct sunlight over health risks

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has issued a health advisory urging Nigerian pilgrims to protect themselves from the intense sun during their Hajj pilgrimage. This advice is particularly crucial as pilgrims prepare for the major ritual of standing on the plain of Arafat, scheduled for Saturday morning.

The Executive Chairman of NAHCON, Malam Jalal Arabi, emphasized the importance of using umbrellas and seeking shade to avoid direct sunlight, which can pose serious health risks. He also advised pilgrims to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even if they do not feel thirsty.

Arabi urged pilgrims to follow all health advisories and instructions from the medical team and to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours. He also cautioned against walking on or touching hot surfaces to stay cool.

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health has also issued a heat advisory, warning that the sweltering temperatures in Mecca could pose significant health risks to the pilgrims. They highlighted that prolonged exposure to the sun could be dangerous and emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to avoid heat-related illnesses.

The ritual on the plain of Arafat, a significant part of the Hajj pilgrimage, takes place in a 33-square-kilometre area that hosts over two million pilgrims each year. Given the harsh weather conditions, both NAHCON and the Saudi Ministry of Health are taking measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all pilgrims during this strenuous outdoor activity .
