Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State asserts that he has maintained the integrity of local government funds since assuming office as governor. Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed chairman and members of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), Mutfwang emphasized his belief that funds allocated for local government councils should be utilized by that tier of government.
Expressing his commitment to the effectiveness of the local government system, Mutfwang addressed the misconception that governors misappropriate local government funds. He stressed the importance of specificity rather than generalizations in such accusations, affirming his support for bringing governance closer to the people through local government representation.
Regarding the dissolution of PLASIEC upon assuming office, Mutfwang clarified that it was based on legal grounds due to the improper constitution of the commission under an illegally appointed Speaker of the House of Assembly. He emphasized the need for integrity and adherence to legal processes in all government institutions.
Mutfwang reiterated his belief in the people’s right to choose their leaders and the importance of ensuring transparent electoral processes. Despite challenges and calls to scrap state electoral commissions, he defended the need for local government autonomy within Nigeria’s federal system.
The newly appointed PLASIEC Chairman, Plangji Chishak, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Plateau State and pledged to conduct credible and transparent elections acceptable to all stakeholders.
