‘I find it relaxing’ — economy is tough but Nigerians are still spending in cinemas

2 mn read

The enthusiasm for visiting cinemas in Nigeria remains strong, despite economic challenges and the convenience of home entertainment options like streaming services. According to interviews conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), cinema-goers expressed various reasons for their continued patronage:

1. **Relaxation and Entertainment**: Stanley Okafor, a trader, highlighted that cinemas offer a relaxing and entertaining environment away from life’s challenges. He finds the experience worth the additional cost because of its quiet and enjoyable atmosphere.

2. **Immersive Experience**: Fola Jaiyesimi, a student, emphasized the superior quality of cinema equipment compared to home setups. He values the immersive experience enhanced by superior sound and visual quality that cinemas provide.

3. **Family Entertainment**: Edwina, a mother, mentioned that she used to frequent cinemas before the COVID-19 pandemic and now occasionally visits with her children for family-appropriate movies. She finds the entertainment experience at cinemas deeper and more satisfying for family outings.

4. **Preference for Privacy**: In contrast, Tricia Moka, a hair stylist, prefers online streaming services for their privacy and convenience. She questions the need to spend money on cinema tickets for movies available online.

5. **Exclusivity and First Viewings**: Cinema supervisors, including Austin Ihentuge and Muoka Chibueze, noted that despite economic hardships, many people still prefer cinemas. They highlighted the appeal of exclusive screenings and the opportunity to be among the first to watch new releases, which are often not immediately available on streaming platforms.

6. **Peak Times During Public Holidays**: Deborah Ajayi, a floor supervisor at Silverbird Cinemas, mentioned that public holidays see increased foot traffic compared to regular days. This suggests that public holidays remain a popular time for families and individuals to visit cinemas for entertainment.

Overall, while some individuals opt for the convenience of streaming services, many still value the unique experience and communal atmosphere that cinemas offer. This enduring appeal underscores the cultural significance of cinemas in Nigeria as spaces for relaxation, family outings, and experiencing the latest in entertainment.
