Planning a vacation during a pandemic requires careful consideration and adherence to safety protocols. Last year was practically a write-off, with numerous cancellations, including vacations. However, after spending so much time indoors and feeling restless, my partner and I decided to plan a getaway, albeit a local one to Abuja.
Given the circumstances, we had to ensure our trip was as safe as possible, especially since we were traveling with a little one. Here’s a checklist we followed to ensure a safe trip amidst the pandemic:
1. Contact accommodations in advance to inquire about their COVID-19 safety measures, from check-in procedures to room service protocols.
2. Equip yourself with masks and face shields, as most establishments, including airlines, require them for entry.
3. Pack hand sanitizers and wipes to sanitize surfaces and objects during your trip.
4. Upon returning from your journey, whether by road or air, take a shower to minimize the risk of potential exposure to pathogens.
5. Opt for outdoor activities whenever possible to avoid poorly ventilated indoor spaces and ensure adequate fresh air. If indoor activities are unavoidable, practice social distancing and maintain a distance of 6 feet from others.
6. Keep your travel group small and establish ground rules for everyone to follow.
7. Utilize private transportation whenever feasible, although this may be constrained by budget considerations.
8. Stay informed about the COVID-19 situation in the area you plan to visit, both domestically and internationally.
9. If the vaccine is available and you are not opposed to vaccination, consider getting vaccinated. However, continue to adhere to other safety measures even after vaccination.
10. Most importantly, remember to have fun while prioritizing safety and well-being.
