The state-owned electricity companies in Ghana have announced a three-week disruption to power supply across the country due to a shortage in gas supply from Nigeria.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, June 13, 2024, the Ghana Grid Company LTD (GRIDCO) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) explained that the reduction in gas supply from Nigeria is expected to last for three weeks. This shortage stems from maintenance works being carried out by a gas supplier in Nigeria.
“The Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCO) and the Electricity Company of Ghana, (ECG) wish to inform the public that due to a reduction in gas supply from Nigeria since Wednesday, June 12th, 2024, some areas across the country have experienced interruptions in power supply,” the statement read.
The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO), in their statement, clarified that the reduction in gas supply is directly linked to maintenance activities by a Nigerian gas supplier. This maintenance work is anticipated to affect Ghana’s overall power generation capacity, potentially leading to load management measures during this period.
Despite the challenges, GRIDCO and ECG assured the public of their efforts to collaborate with other stakeholders in the power sector to optimize available resources. This collaborative approach aims to minimize the impact of the gas supply shortage on consumers.
In conclusion, GRIDCO and ECG apologized to Ghanaian residents for any inconvenience caused by the anticipated power disruptions.
