“FG Urges TETFund Governing Council to Enhance Quality and Performance of Tertiary Institutions”

The Federal Government has called on the Governing Council of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to harness their expertise to significantly enhance the quality and performance of Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. This appeal was made by the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, during the inauguration of the TETFund Board of Trustees and the governing councils of several federal tertiary institutions in Abuja.

Professor Mamman urged the council members to leverage their networks to secure additional resources and support for the institutions. He underscored the government’s high expectations in addressing ongoing challenges such as inadequate capacity in universities and colleges of education, and frequent disruptions to academic calendars due to strikes.

The Minister emphasized the importance of collaboration with academic unions, citing ongoing discussions with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to prevent further strikes. He stressed that a key role of councils globally is to attract resources from various stakeholders to bolster institutional development.

In a related statement, ASUU President Professor Emmanuel Osodeke highlighted the critical role of TETFund in sustaining tertiary education in Nigeria. He called for prudent management of TETFund resources to drive necessary reforms and address the current state of the educational system.
