“Edo Gubernatorial Election: Parties to Sign Peace Accord on September 12”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that political parties participating in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State will sign a peace accord on September 12, 2024, in Benin City.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, revealed this decision at an emergency meeting with national chairmen and secretaries of all registered political parties. The early signing aims to allow the National Peace Committee, led by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, to monitor compliance with the accord in the lead-up to the election.

Yakubu criticized political parties for not adhering to regulations, particularly in uploading details of their polling and collation agents. He emphasized that the proactive approach of signing the peace accord ahead of the election is intended to foster a more orderly and peaceful electoral process, with ongoing oversight by the Peace Committee.
