Channii Monroe, formerly known as Chanaaz Mangroe, has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles accusing the American music producer The-Dream, whose real name is Terius Gesteelde-Diamant, of rape, sexual battery, and sex trafficking. In the lawsuit, Monroe alleges that The-Dream lured her with promises of advancing her music career in 2015, only to subject her to repeated sexual assaults, physical abuse, and emotional manipulation.
According to Monroe, The-Dream pressured her into unwanted sexual encounters, sometimes using threats and coercion, such as recording intimate moments and threatening to share the footage. Monroe describes a pattern of control and abuse, including being locked in dark rooms, forced to have sex in public spaces, and enduring threats with a gun placed beside her during encounters.
The-Dream is a highly influential figure in the music industry, known for his work with artists like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Mariah Carey, contributing to hits like “Umbrella,” “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” and “Break My Soul.” Despite his professional success, these allegations have tarnished his reputation.
In response to the accusations, The-Dream has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, calling the claims “untrue and defamatory.” He expressed offense and sadness over the accusations, emphasizing his commitment to helping aspiring artists without harassment.
Monroe’s lawsuit also accuses The-Dream of sex trafficking, echoing similar allegations in other high-profile cases within the music industry. This case sheds light on ongoing issues of exploitation and abuse fueled by power dynamics in the entertainment business. Monroe, represented by Douglas H. Wigdor and Meredith A. Firetog, hopes that sharing her story will empower others and prevent future instances of abuse.
As the legal proceedings unfold, this case underscores the urgent need for greater scrutiny and accountability in the entertainment industry, particularly concerning the treatment of women and aspiring artists. It serves as a stark reminder of the darker realities that can lurk behind the glitz and glamour of the music business.
