A consultant paediatrician has dispelled the misconception that applying breast milk to the eyes of jaundiced babies can cure the condition. Dr. Funmi Adesokan, a Consultant Paediatrician at Osun State University Teaching Hospital, clarified this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo.

Dr. Adesokan explained that jaundice occurs due to the excessive breakdown of red blood cells, leading to the production of bilirubin, a yellow pigment. Contrary to popular belief, applying breast milk or other herbal remedies to the eyes does not alter this process or effectively clear jaundice. She also debunked claims that pawpaw water or other herbal concoctions can treat jaundice.

Regarding treatment, Dr. Adesokan mentioned the use of phototherapy, a specific type of light exposure, to treat jaundice in babies. This therapy requires a specific wavelength of light and continuous exposure to the baby’s skin. She cautioned against using sunlight as a substitute, as it could be harmful to the baby’s delicate skin.

Jaundice in babies can result from various factors such as blood group incompatibility, enzyme deficiencies, infections, liver abnormalities, and insufficient breastfeeding. Dr. Adesokan stressed the importance of seeking medical attention to determine the type, cause, and severity of jaundice for appropriate treatment.

While physiologic jaundice, a mild form, may not require treatment, pathologic jaundice can lead to serious complications such as brain damage if left untreated. Dr. Adesokan emphasized the need for prompt medical evaluation and treatment to prevent adverse outcomes.

Additionally, Dr. Adesokan encouraged mothers to attend antenatal care (ANC) appointments to ensure a safe pregnancy and delivery. She emphasized the importance of breastfeeding on demand every two to three hours and suggested taking advantage of government primary healthcare centers for affordable ANC services.
