NIGERIA SETS NEW POWER GENERATION RECORD WITH 5,313MW

< 1 mn read

Nigeria has reached a new power generation milestone, achieving 5,313 megawatts (MW) of electricity on Monday, the highest in three years. This achievement comes as part of the federal government’s commitment to improve the power sector.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu confirmed the record, highlighting the crucial role of Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in managing the increased power output. Adelabu cautioned that if DisCos do not adequately handle the surge in power generation, it could lead to grid instability and potential collapse.

The latest figures represent a significant increase from the 5,000MW recorded on May 3. The federal government has set an ambitious target of 6,000MW by the end of the year, building on progress made since President Bola Tinubu’s administration began on May 29, 2023.

Adelabu emphasized efforts to encourage industries to purchase bulk energy, supporting the sector’s stability and growth. This record underscores Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to enhance its power infrastructure and meet the growing energy demands.
