Nigeria’s power generation has reached a three-year high of 5,313 megawatts (MW), according to a statement from the Ministry of Power. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, highlighted this achievement and urged Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to increase their energy uptake to avoid a potential grid collapse.
Adelabu emphasized that if power produced is not adequately picked up by the DisCos, it could result in grid instability due to a drop in frequency. He also noted efforts to encourage industries to purchase bulk energy to support the grid.
The Minister’s statement, issued by Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations to Adelabu, also reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to achieving a power generation target of 6,000 MW by the end of the year. This pledge was initially made in May, and the progress since President Bola Tinubu’s administration began has shown a rise to 5,000 MW by May 3.
Adelabu expressed confidence that the sector’s continued improvements would meet the 6,000 MW goal by year-end.
