A lawmaker from the Lagos State House of Assembly, Bonu Solomon (APC-Badagry 1), along with other Lagos residents, has advocated for the preservation of traditional weddings despite growing modern and religious influences.

In interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), they emphasized the cultural, social, and symbolic significance of traditional weddings.

Solomon highlighted that traditional weddings offer a deeper connection to cultural roots, honoring ancestral customs, and fostering community unity. He noted that they are often more cost-effective than modern weddings, focusing on meaningful traditions over elaborate decorations.

Lateef Rasheed, Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association, Badagry Chapter, added that traditional weddings reflect the true identity of the people and establish familial connections that are often absent in conventional weddings.

Alhaji Hakeem Odubeko, a general merchant from Ikorodu, preferred traditional weddings for their respect and the ability they provide for couples to endure marital challenges.

Adewunmi Ajayi, a trader in Ijede, argued that traditional weddings predate colonial influences and were originally the norm before the introduction of white weddings.

Babatunde Ajose, CEO of WestGate Resources Development Centre, emphasized that traditional weddings are deeply rooted in cultural practices and offer a foundation for a successful and harmonious marriage, contrasting with the imported practices of colonial and religious wedding styles.

Dr. Ovie Edomi, a publisher in Ikeja, affirmed that traditional marriages are ancient and align with cultural practices, offering a sense of pride and commitment.

Adejoke Alogba, a trader, praised traditional weddings for their role in fostering long-term relationships and discouraging divorce, while Alhaji AbdulRasak Osho noted that they make known prohibitions to the couple, promoting harmony.

Taiwo Bello, a member of the NBA in Badagry, highlighted that traditional weddings introduce families and facilitate mutual acceptance, with no legal restrictions on practices like divorce or polygamy.
