A group of hackers have taken control of an official Facebook page belonging to the Kano State Hisbah Board.
The cyber attackers seized the social media platform, which boasts over 82,000 followers, on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, and began inundating it with sexually explicit content.
The Kano State Hisbah Corps serves as a religious police force responsible for enforcing Shari’a law among Muslims in Kano State and other regions of Northern Nigeria. Their duties include preventing acts they perceive as immoral, such as alcohol consumption, sexual relationships between unmarried individuals, and the use of mannequins in boutiques.
Hisbah is well-known for activities such as confiscating and destroying alcoholic beverages, arresting unmarried couples found in hotels, and disrupting social gatherings deemed inappropriate under their doctrine.
However, since taking over the Facebook page, the hackers have been posting content that starkly contradicts Hisbah’s beliefs and values.
One of the videos shared by the hackers depicted a white woman breastfeeding her child with her breast fully exposed.
HISBAH VOWS TO RETRIEVE FACEBOOK ACCOUNT
Meanwhile, on Friday, the Commander General of the Board, Aminu Daurawa, confirmed the hacking incident and reassured the public that efforts were being made to reclaim the Facebook page.
“Kano State Hisbah Board is aware that its Facebook page has been hacked and inappropriate content is being posted. On behalf of the board, I urge everyone to assist in resolving this issue,” he told reporters.
Daurawa further explained that the board’s ICT department is actively working to regain access to the page and is in communication with Meta to address the situation.
Sani Zailani, Head of the ICT unit at Hisbah, mentioned that the account had been hacked before, and Meta had been contacted about the latest breach. Meta has reportedly promised to resolve the issue within 48 hours.
