Genevieve Nnaji, renowned Nigerian actress and filmmaker, recently shared her candid experience with seeking partnerships in Hollywood following the success of her film “Lionheart,” which was acquired by Netflix in 2018. Speaking at the 2024 AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum/Afreximbank Annual Meetings, where she acknowledged the support from Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX), Genevieve reflected on her initial aspirations and challenges in Hollywood.
Despite the global recognition and financial success of “Lionheart,” Genevieve expressed disappointment in the lack of support she encountered in Hollywood to further her career. She recounted realizing for the first time that she was seen merely as a commodity, with Hollywood interested in her talent but primarily for their own benefit and narrative.
“They wanted what I had but for their benefit. It was all about their story,” Genevieve remarked, highlighting the disconnect she felt in aligning her vision with Hollywood’s expectations of African narratives. She emphasized that while CANEX and similar initiatives provide essential support, her hopes of finding substantial backing in Hollywood were not realized.
Genevieve also revealed her decision to remain in Nollywood despite opportunities to pursue a career in Hollywood earlier. She articulated her commitment to developing Nigeria’s film industry, Nollywood, into a formidable entity capable of producing authentic African stories for global audiences. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed a belief in Nollywood’s potential to stand alongside Hollywood and Bollywood in shaping the global film landscape.
As the conversation unfolded, Genevieve underscored the pivotal role of events like the AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum in fostering partnerships and driving growth within Africa’s creative sectors. Despite the challenges encountered, Genevieve remains steadfast in her mission to elevate Nigerian cinema and tell stories that resonate with African audiences worldwide.
