2026 WCQ: Super Eagles must keep fighting despite defeat to Benin Republic – Finidi

< 1 mn read

Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has said his side can’t afford to give up on their target of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their defeat to Benin Republic.

The former African champions suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in their matchday four encounter in Abidjan on Monday night.

The defeat leaves the West Africans in fifth position on the Group C table after four matches.

Finidi challenged his players not to throw in the towel at this stage.

Speaking on the disappointing defeat, Finidi said: “There’s no special formula to win; we have to see how the players will start a new season now and see how we can get the beat out of the players.

“Everybody must be committed and I believe with commitment we will win games. I believe we are going to win games and if we can win games, the battle will still be there.

“We can’t throw in the towel because we’ve had only three points, we have to find a way to get these players back in a way for them to perform.”
