President Museveni has urged religious and government leaders to refrain from ostracizing individuals who practice witchcraft and traditional religions. He emphasized the importance of treating traditionalists with patience and engaging in dialogue with them rather than adopting confrontational approaches.
Sharing his own experiences, President Museveni highlighted his collaboration with witch doctors and religious groups during the guerrilla war in the 1980s. Despite coming from a religious background himself, he worked closely with traditionalists, recognizing their contributions to national development.
Museveni emphasized the need for religious and government leaders to emulate his approach of cooperation with traditionalists during the war. He encouraged understanding and collaboration, acknowledging the role traditionalists played in supporting the rebel forces.
The President recounted instances where he participated in rituals alongside traditionalists, such as jumping over a chicken carcass, while also maintaining close ties with religious groups. He underscored the importance of patience and mutual respect in engaging with individuals of different beliefs.
The theme of this year’s Heroes Day celebrations, “Hail Our Heroes; A Secure Uganda is Now A Reality,” reflected the nation’s commitment to honoring those who contributed to its security and prosperity.
