Lagos residents are voicing concerns over the skyrocketing price of beans, a crucial source of protein. They urge government intervention as prices have surged dramatically since January 2024. A 40kg bag of beans now costs ₦115,000, up from ₦26,000, and a 100kg bag has risen to ₦230,000 from ₦55,000.
Mrs. Uloma Chigozirim, a housewife, expressed worries about potential malnutrition due to the high prices. Uche Ikenga, a beans farmer, explained that last year’s low harvest, exacerbated by cattle foraging on crops, has led to the current scarcity. Trader Ahmed Yusuf noted that demand is high, but many farmers couldn’t cultivate this year, causing prices to soar unpredictably.
Mrs. Bunmi Arowolo, a jewelry seller, called on federal and state governments to address the issue, particularly by tackling farm insecurity. Nutritionist Adaeze Oparaku emphasized beans’ nutritional importance, suggesting other protein sources as substitutes. Eugenia Uloma and vegetable farmer Barinedum Legbara highlighted the need for government action to combat food inflation and promote strategic crop cultivation to ensure food security.
