The Lagos State Government has announced its intention to hand over 270 housing units at the Egan-Igando mixed housing estate to the original applicants (allotees) after a prolonged delay. According to a statement released on Wednesday in Lagos by the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, the official commissioning and hand-over of keys to the first 270 homeowners will take place on June 6. The statement, signed by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Adeola Salako, highlighted that the estate had been under development for 21 years.

Akinderu-Fatai emphasized that the estate is part of the state government’s commitment to providing affordable and high-quality housing for Lagos residents. Despite setbacks such as vandalism and theft, the completion strategy has focused on delivering units in clusters. He commended the patience of the original applicants and expressed excitement over overcoming the challenges to deliver the first cluster of 270 homes, fulfilling Governor Sanwo-Olu’s pledge to complete ongoing housing projects.

Additionally, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, AbdulHafis Gbolahan, confirmed the completion of the preparation process by May 31, paving the way for the official unveiling of the estate on June 6. He stressed the importance of collaboration between contractors, community members, and the government for a smooth handover process. Gbolahan also expressed gratitude to the prospective homeowners for their patience, understanding, and trust throughout the years of waiting for the housing scheme’s completion, expressing confidence that the end result would be worth the wait.
