5 FOODS WE LOVE TO EAT BUT CAN BE POISONOUS

< 1 mn read

Some of the foods we enjoy most can be surprisingly dangerous if not handled or prepared correctly. Here are five common foods that can be poisonous:

  1. APPLES:
    • Apples are a popular and nutritious fruit, but their seeds contain amygdalin, a compound that can release cyanide when crushed or chewed. While swallowing a few whole seeds isn’t harmful, chewing them can lead to cyanide poisoning if consumed in large quantities. To avoid any risk, it’s best to avoid eating apple seeds altogether.
  2. CHERRIES:
    • Cherries are delicious, but their pits also contain amygdalin, which can produce cyanide when ingested. Accidentally swallowing a few pits is usually harmless, but chewing and consuming large amounts can be dangerous. Always remove cherry pits before eating or cooking with them.
  3. ALMONDS:
    • While sweet almonds are safe and healthy, bitter almonds contain high levels of amygdalin, which can convert to cyanide in the body. Just a small number of bitter almonds can cause serious poisoning, particularly in children. Fortunately, bitter almonds are not commonly sold for consumption, but it’s important to know the difference.
  4. CASTOR OIL:
    • Castor oil is safe for use, but the seeds from which it is extracted contain ricin, a highly potent toxin. The process of extracting castor oil removes the ricin, but attempting to extract the oil at home can be extremely dangerous. Never handle or process castor seeds yourself.
  5. POTATOES:
    • Potatoes are a staple in many diets, but green potatoes or those that have sprouted contain solanine, a toxic substance. Consuming solanine can cause nausea, headaches, and even neurological issues. To prevent solanine poisoning, store potatoes in a cool, dark place, and avoid eating any that have turned green or sprouted.
