Five children, including three aged 12, have been arrested in the United Kingdom on suspicion of murdering an 80-year-old man who died following a severe assault at a park.
Leicestershire Police reported that the incident occurred near the park entrance, and a group of young people fled the scene before emergency services arrived. The elderly man succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening, prompting the police to launch a murder investigation.
The arrested individuals include a 14-year-old boy and girl, as well as two 12-year-old girls and a 12-year-old boy.
A Senior Investigating Officer, Insp Emma Matts, confirmed that the case has now officially been classified as a murder investigation. “Sadly, following the death of the victim last night, this has now become a murder investigation,” Matts said.
She added that the police are working swiftly to gather details about the attack and are continuing their efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding it. “A scene preservation will remain in place at the park while our investigation progresses. Local officers are also in the area carrying out reassurance patrols and can speak with anyone in the local community who has concerns,” Matts stated.
Additionally, Leicestershire Police will make a voluntary referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct, as the force had prior contact with the victim.
