The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in collaboration with the Nigerian Military, successfully thwarted a bank robbery attempt in Abaji Area Council of the FCT. According to a statement by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the operation led by Commissioner Benneth Igweh on June 13 resulted in the intervention that prevented the robbery.
The incident involved a 15-man robbery gang who attacked a bank using dynamite in their attempt to rob it. Security forces engaged the robbers in a fierce gun battle, prompting the criminals to flee with varying degrees of bullet wounds. During the confrontation, three members of the gang were apprehended by the security forces.
Adeh further reported that one suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was subdued by the security forces and subsequently set on fire by an angry mob at the scene. Additionally, a police operative and the gang leader sustained serious bullet injuries and were rushed to the hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
The search operation is ongoing to capture other fleeing members of the gang who sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire. Adeh emphasized that the Commissioner of Police commended the effectiveness of the joint operation and reaffirmed the commitment of the command to maintaining security and making the FCT a hostile environment for criminals.
